Our Company History

Howell Rodeo Co. Inc., is owned and operated by Jerry & Debra Howell of Crow, Oregon, which is a small town outside of Eugene.

Jerry, being a second generation cowboy started his rodeo involvement at the age of 5. He rode calves every chance he got. Later he added roping, wild cow milking and bull riding to his repertoire. As he aged, Jerry really wanted to improve his bull riding, so he and his two younger brothers bought some practice bulls. Some were a little more "practice" than what the were looking for. Jerry ended up buying out his two brothers, and went to work for the legendary Henry Christensen of Christensen Bros. Rodeo Co. in Eugene, Oregon and saw the other side of rodeo. In 1975, Jerry put aside his bull riding career and took a look at the contracting side of rodeo. Henry Christensen was leasing some of Jerry's bulls when he needed a few extra animals. Being that this guaranteed a paycheck, and was much easier on the body, Jerry decided that becoming a Stock Contractor was what he wanted to do. This insured he would continue to be involved in what he loved most, RODEO! He built up his bull herd, bought some horses, and put on his first rodeo at his own arena in Mohawk, Oregon. It is amazing how far his rodeo contracting career has come.

Jerry feels that rodeo is great entertainment for the entire family, and strives to keep his company a family run operation. He has 2 grown daughters that stay involved in the business. Jerry also has an 18 year old son that runs most of the junior rodeos and helps at the big shows too. Debra takes care of the secretary end of the business while Jerry handles the stock end of things.

Bulls have been a real strong point of Howell Rodeo Co. for many years. They have had many award winning bulls, not only in the Northwest, but also as far away as Oklahoma. Jerry is Known as a "Bull Man" seeming to have an eye for bucking bulls. Howell Rodeo Co. not only puts on sanctioned rodeos but many rough stock rodeos and bull ridings. They work with the NPRA, Pro-west, CCPRA, and the NYRA. In the fall of 2003 Jerry joined the PBR. He had been going to the Pendleton PBR for three years, but by joining the PBR Jerry has been allowed to attend more of the big tour shows. He has also expanded into the college rodeo circuit.

Jerry has been on the NPRA rodeo board several times and Debra was voted to be the NPRA finals secretary 7 times by the Finals Board. Lisa Howell-Samples has been voted by the Finals Contestants to be one of the timers for the NPRA Finals 6 times. They strive as a family, and as a business to do more,  and grow more, every year for their committees and fans that attend the rodeos.
